Happy Centennial, Porter Bank!

It’s time to celebrate! April 2020 marks a special milestone for Porter Bank. Our bank has officially served Northwest Indiana for 100 years! Although some of our celebration plans were postponed due to COVID-19, we look forward to serving our customers face-to-face again, soon! Our centennial milestone is a chance to appreciate the past, and get excited for the future.

Our story began when the founders observed the need for a place to safe keep cash and get loans in Porter and Chesterton. There were also needs of local small businesses. Porter Bank played a role in helping our community grow! Of course, banking looked different in the 1920s. Virtual banking did not exist, nor did drive-up windows and other modern amenities. But the economy was ‘roaring’, and people wanted the new innovations of their time like, cars, washing machines, and radios. Porter Bank provided opportunities for people and businesses while keeping their funds safe.

Porter Bank’s current location is on the original plot of land! Our staff is proud of their deep-rooted history in Northwest Indiana. We currently have thirty-six employees throughout our three locations, and the average length of employment is over 15 years. We know we have something special. There aren’t many small, community banks that remain in the same location, building, and community for 100 years. We endured the Great Depression and the Great Recession, and served as a pillar of strength in the community during good times and bad. And we will survive this pandemic, too!

The key to Porter Bank’s longevity is adapting to change while never compromising our commitment to our customers. Porter Bank has continued its legacy of supporting our neighbors. We have provided loans and deposit services to many local businesses, municipalities and the residents of Northwest Indiana for 100 years and will continue to do for many years to come.
